Spitting Towards The Sky
12 April 2008 | 2,480 viewsRead this in Malaysiakini – Tengku Faris: Non-Malays should not seek equality:
Kelantan Crown Prince Tengku Faris Petra said today that Malays had been coerced into giving non-Malays citizenship and the latter should therefore not seek equality or special treatment.
He said this during his keynote speech at a forum titled “Malay unity is the core of national unity” organised by the newly formed Barisan Bertindak Perpaduan Melayu in Kuala Lumpur today.
As a Malay, I apologise to all non-Malays that there are among my fellow Malays those who hold such views.
It is disgusting, even if these people have a right to their opinions, and a right to express them.
But don’t worry. Come the next elections, we shall make sure that those who hold similar views will not even come close to forming the federal government.
That’s the only lesson they can understand.

Man, this topic is too sensitive for non-Malays to comment on in any intelligent manner. So, you gotta take the lead, Aisehman.

Aisehman
As an Anak Kelate, I am very sad, very very sad.
Either the Crown Prince did not screen through the text of the speech before he reads it or that he was being exploited by the ultra-fanatic UMNO Malays who saw the humiliation of UMNO as a Malay thing. UMNO does not equate to Malay or Malay equates to UMNO.
I pray the Tengku search hard in his soul and his heart whether he truly believes what he had said and has an answer to what he just spoke.

As Anok Kelate I have no intention be be a derhaka kepada Raja, but HRH Tg. Mahkota OF KELANTAN racial speech is definitely NOT HIS but prepared by an UMNO ELDER who is also his ELDER RELATIVE. You know whom I am refering to. Thank GOD ALMIGHTY IT wasnt the Pakatan Raayat of the other opposition States that won in Kelantan in the PRU 2008 or there will be havoc in Kelantan!
As I have written to the Bloggers before HRH iS going to be the MOST BELOVED RULER of THIS COUNTRY.

The Regent of Perak is held in high regards by a large majority of Malaysians. It is no surprise there are others who wish to share the limelight. There are, of course, many ways of doing this. Those like Raja Nazrin, do it with finesse and in a dignified manner. They earn the accolades by displaying their intelligence, their reasoning ability and their command of the language. Others who may not have these qualities may do it differently.
Raja Nazrin and the likes are accorded the respect because of their consistent stance and their commitment to worthy and noble causes. To wish for the respect is one thing, to earn it is another!

I don’t give a sh#t about special treatment. Its for people with special needs, like physical or mental disabilities.
But non-Malays should not seek equality?? What planet / century is this royalty comes from?
I know, I know, these group wants to continue to enjoy the gravy train by not working equally as hard as non-Malays. Hence the special treatment.
Wake-up! Its the 21st Century already!
11 lucia 12 April 2008 @ 11:33 pm
thanks aisehman.
as a non malay i’m sad to hear this.
“malays coerced into giving non malays citizenship.”
coerced? that is a very strong word. we non malays don’t need anyone to give us citezenship. if we are born here (i was!), means we are malaysians already, thus automatically we have malaysian citizenship.
“malay unity is the core of national unity.”
this sounds like ketuanan melayu at work, which a number of my malay friends are against too. malek hussein, MAFREL chairman (also the RM3 bil ISA man) had said he didn’t want ketuanan melayu but what he wants is keadilan melayu.
i can understand and don’t mind the special privileges of the malays e.g. post of PM must be malays, malay language as official language and islam as official religion and even NEP – FOR THE POOR MALAYS but i feel that the malays should NOT treat us as 2nd class citizens, should not lord themsevles over us non malays (malay supremacy – the ketuanan melayu, see). yes aisheman you use the word ‘disgusting’. it is indeed disgusting to think that there are people who think they are high above other people.
i think i am going to rant about this in my blog tomorow. so sad. 50 years and we still have malays with this kind of thinking. *mad*

13 daffodils 12 April 2008 @ 11:52 pm
Exactly this is what divide us Malaysians when we talk in terms of monoethnicity rather than in terms of a whole cohesive united Bangsa Malaysia. After 50 years there are still people who refuse to accept the existence of other races as equal. So sad in a progressive world we are backtracking and not coming together as one.
Anyway good to hear from a progressive aisehman who does not hold such views.
14 Maverick SM 13 April 2008 @ 12:21 am
I fear that such speech will instigate the clash of civilization and tears apart the social fabric which had been held on fragile strings.
It is utmost disappointing for the fact that this speech was made by non other than a future Sultan.
It certainly breaks the hearts of non Malay Malaysians.
15 Dhillon 13 April 2008 @ 12:40 am
Well its heartbreaking to still read such racist comments. I am a Malaysian and I was born here and so was my parents and grandparents. I got no where else to go. I earn minimum wage so I got no where to run to as well. It breaks my heart that despite all these years there are still some out there who think along racial lines. Its worse when our leaders say it but even more so when its royalty.
It is a little soothing that our friend Aisehman is a blue Malaysian. Hopefully we will have more Malaysians like you otherwise there is no hope for our country.
16 kahwangc 13 April 2008 @ 12:56 am
Dear Aisehman,
As a non-malay, I really want to see more malays like you, haris ibrahim, RPK, malik imtiaz, etc. to build Malaysia on a solid foundation of non-discrimination against race, religion, culture, etc.
This is the 21st century and we stil have malays who think that this country belongs to them only and the other rest are at their mercy.
Are we really interested to build our country to greater heights or not?
If yes, then there is no room for discrimination, especially institutionalised racism.
thank you, bro.
17 hotbutwise 13 April 2008 @ 1:45 am
I fully agree with your posting on MT, though it really hurt me (& all non-malay) I believe this is done without HRH Tg Faris direct knowledge. As RPK has for warned in his article yesterday, BN (UMNO) in particular will try all means to create racial tension among us.So they could claim later “See I told you Rakyat….Only a strong BN can give peace & security…but…you all vote for PR…so now this is what you get…Dear Aisehman…I’m worry that another May 13th is around the corner…if not too soon !!!Please help this nation by spreading the hidden agenda of the evil UMNO’s plan to create racial riot in this beloved nation of us.Peace To Malaysia !!!

It beggars believe that a prince can utter such blatant racist remarks in this day and age. If it really was true that he was just reading a script that someone else had written, it is still totally unacceptable – is he dumb or what? This prince has set the respect that people have for the monarchy back several years – he should make an immediate apology.

20 ramumenon 13 April 2008 @ 8:05 am
I think the views of Tengku Faris Petra and others who support such perspectives need to be expressed openly. I would rather have full freedom of speech, even of controversial topics than have these views articulated to smaller groups and used to incite violence. Views like this should be debated openly by the rakyat, such as in this and other similar forums so that people can make reasonable judgments.
That should be the pattern in post March 2008 Malaysia.
Malaysia aspires to be a developed state in 2020, which at last count is a mere 12 years away. A developed state is more than just “economically” advanced status – it presupposes the emergence of a civil society based on constitutional government. Modern constitutional government is largely based on the protection of individual rights, and to a certain extent, protection of the rights of minorities.
The issue for Malaysians to consider is how it would be possible for this country to ever reach a developed state, when certain ethnic groups are advised never to “…to seek equality and privileges.” Most Malaysians of non-Malay ancestry do not want privileges but certainly aspire for equal treatment under the law.
How can this country ever reach a developed status without “equality” for all its citizens, irrespective of ethnic origin?

I am really surprised at the hostile reaction to tuanku’s beliefs. Is this somethingnew? He is there to protect the Malays and their interests. He is the Raja Melayu without whom there can’t be a Ketuanan Melayu. And don’t forget the Royal Malay Regiment; they are there to safeguard the tuankus and Malays. They are the defenders of the race. The Raja Muda of Perak is an anomaly, an aberration in the history of the Malay royalty.

Thank you aisehman for saying what most of us would like to say.
People are now talking about unity and we have this royal pain doing the opposite. Royalties should remember that if they want to stay relevant, they have to treat all Malaysians alike and those under their respective states as their subjects irrespective of race. If you want respect, you also have to show respect.

Thank you Aisehman, and, the many other Malays who understand that there’s a fair and equal place for every single Malaysian under this Malaysian sun.
It saddens us (the nons) to hear such words being uttered especially from the guardian of the rakyats after 50 years of independence.
28 Anak Malaysia 13 April 2008 @ 11:34 am
Well Tengku has his opinion and so do we. We respect his right to voice his opinion just as HRH should equally respect our rights to voice ours.
In the first place, the Constitution did not accord “special rights” to the Malays. This must be made clear.
To constantly remind your Malay subjects that they need special rights is insulting and damaging to them. This crutch mentality must be removed so that they can start learning to compete. In today’s globalised economy, they are not competing only with the non Malays in Malaysia but the whole world. The Chinese(China) Indians (India), Vietnamese, Taiwanese etc don’t give a damn what special rights you have. If you continue to cocoon them with the kampung mentality, they will stay that way and very soon, they will be swamped by the other countries that have been able to move ahead competitively.
Thoughts and speeches such as those by Raja Nazrin are welcomed. Speeches such as these we can do with less, none if possible.
29 pesa 13 April 2008 @ 11:37 am
As a Kelantanese, I’m shocked after watching the snippet of the speech. The tengku was reading the text in front of him words by words. Hopefully it’s just a case of the text being shoved to him. However the damage was done and like aisehman, I woukd like to apologize to all Malaysians over the Tengku speech. Not many share the view.

Yep somebody pointed out that this Tengku could one day be our king. Very disturbing thought. I hope his speech was written by someone else for him and he just read it. Even though still disturbing but at least it is not his own words.
The Conference of Rulers should step in and do something about setting the records right with such royals whose thoughts are detrimental for national unity.

Didn’t he realise what he was reading even as he was reading it out loud? If he was forced to read it, what does this say of him? So either he is a real racist or he is a mindless puppet.
48 RaZmaTaZ 14 April 2008 @ 6:58 pm
There is no such thing as equality. Not between races, religion or clans or even wealth. Never between men and women. So you people are all no different than the politicians you criticize; hypocrites.
You have your opinion, we have ours. You want your utophia, and we want to be fair to all. And being fair does not equate to equality.
Even in Islam, the religion never preaches equality. Only fairness. Go ahead and ask PAS Kelantan if all other religion is treated as equal to Islam. Treated fairly, yes. Never equal. And the same goes with man and women, rich and poor or Malays and non-Malays.
So what’s up with all these equality shit? Why not look in the mirror and ask yourselves if you treat your wives/gf as equals? How about your friends? Your subordinates? Your boss?
49 Frank 14 April 2008 @ 7:00 pm
kawaib hadil
I think you got it wrong.
The Federal Constitution has already provided the safeguards for protecting the special position of the Malays.
You don’t need a ruler to protect the Malays. The Malays can protect themselves. The This is ALREADY in pace in the Federal Constitution and the ruler OPERATES through the Constitution. And this does not mean he is allowed to engage in racial politics of the country.
However, the Malay ruler is definitely required to ensure that the CUSTOMS (include religion) of the Malays are protected and not diluted by the Federal Constitution. That is the intent on the role of the monarchy IN THE CONSTITUTION when it is clearly stated the Agung is head of Islam and a protector of the special position of the Malays.
It is an insult to the Malay race and to any Malay person and to the Malay cultural sensibilities to think or even to allow anyone to even say that the Malay race has to be protected by the Malay sultanate or by the Malay rulers. It is like the English-speaking people needs a British monarchy to survive in this world.
It is a wrong perception that the Malay ruler exists to protect the Malay race. It is nonsensical. The special interests of the Malays is NOT protected by the Malay rulers, it is BY THE FEDERAL CONSTITUTION through its enabling power to the Agung to only look after special position of the Malays as it was deemed the Malays need that protection in 1957.
As Aisehman very well put it: We, the rakyat and the Kelantan royalty were thrown into the mud by the UMNO ultras who organised the forum, thinking that the rakyat, the non malays would not criticise the next in line to the sultan. How wrong… this is the age of the internet.

Warkah buat DYTM Tengku Mahkota Kelantan
Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra
Ampun Tuanku beribu ampun sembah patik harap diampun.

For this to come out of a Kelantanese royalty, let alone a prospective Agong (should Sultan Ismail Petra pass on before the end of Terengganu’s and Kedah’s terms), is very unbecoming, regardless of whether or not the speech was written by someone else.
It clearly shows a certain degree of unspoken influence to either the speech writer or the Crown Prince. Certainly hard to pin the blame for now.
Or is it not the time to blame?

HI, seems the Crown Prince was set up. this is what Haris posted on his blog:
Well, Lil’ Hummingbird tells me that she heard from the horse’s mouth that the Crown Prince never made those statements.
Apparently, it was written in HRH’s scripted speech by some official, but he re-worked it the night before he was to deliver the keynote address.
I’m also told that whilst he delivered his re-worked speech, the media reps in attendance were given the original text.
So it would seem that the reporters merely extracted from the distributed original text and did not report on what was actually said.

Everyone is created equal by God- Tengkus, Malays, Chinese, Indians. Unless you follow a God that is racist, then believe in what Tengku says. And if you still keep thinking that `one race’ is more equal than others, then, really you must be believing in a false God. Change and convert. The plain truth is that you’ve already lost your respect years ago when you’ve decided to be the superior race- no different than Hitler! Share your wealth. Looks like only some Malays are real Muslims. Others? Can’t be!
